      PBSC SAILING TEAM PROGRAMSThe PBSC Junior Sailing Program is designed to meet the needs of each individual sailor in terms of skill level, size, and maturity. The program offers courses to meet the needs of new sailors timid to take the helm to the advanced racers ready to take on national competitions. Level one US Sailing Certified instructors who carry First Aid and CPR certification teach all courses. The program also staffs two Level 2 Certified Coaches to run the racing program at PBSC. It is set up to introduce both the sport of sailing and water navigation here at PBSC. This class is designed to teach a basic knowledge of sailing and the necessary skills to sail solo. Instruction will emphasize teamwork, sportsmanship and fun. Sailors are introduced to:
Cost: $195 for Members, $355 for Non-Members GREEN FLEET OPTI RACE TEAMThis class is designed for sailors who are at the advanced end of the beginnerŐs spectrum and ready to learn sailboat racing. Usually the participants have completed at least one session in the Harbor Racers. This course is designed to prepare sailors for the Optimist Championship Racing Fleets. Students will be introduced to the Racing Rules of Sailing and intermediate racing techniques. Instructors will teach fundamental boat handling and racing skills.
There is an expected level of commitment on behalf of the sailor to come to practice ready to learn and to carry a notebook with them to take notes on lectures, debriefs, and regattas. In addition, the Opti Race team encourages the sailors to follow the physical and dietary requirements of the Advanced Opti Race Team. Cost: $290 for Members, $400 for Non-Members ADVANCED OPTI RACE TEAMThis course is designed for advanced sailors between the ages of 9-15 weighing less than 130 lbs. who are interested in advanced racing. The curriculum will focus on mastering the skills of sailboat racing and will provide the necessary tools to race competitively against the top sailors in the nation. The club recommends that these sailors provide their own Optimist fully equipped to meet competitive racing standards. The team participates in top regattas around the nation. Cost: $290 for Members, $400 for Non-Members JR Sailing Program InformationYour child can learn to sail from the beautiful shores of the Palm Beach Sailing Club, located just north of 45th Street on Flagler Drive. Sailing 101-Starfish & Tuna Pre-requisite: Must be 7 years of age. This goal oriented course teaches younger kids the basic sailing skills and principals. This course is taught in Optimists and 420’s. Curriculum includes learning the names of boat parts, finding wind direction, steering with a tiller, practice tacking and jibing, crisis management, and additional sailing skills. The class enables the kids to become familiar with water safety and dingy sailing, and to feel confident on the water. Novice Opti Racing (Green Fleet) Pre-requisite: Completion of Star Fish & Tunas, or instructor promotion (Sailors should be able to navigate around a triangle racing course and know all points of sail.) This course is designed to prepare sailors for the Optimist Racing Fleets. Students will be introduced to the Racing Rules of Sailing and intermediate racing techniques. Instructors will teach skills sitting on the rail, using tiller extension, roll tacking, equipment care, changing sail controls and sportsmanship. Sailors will practice starting and sailing race courses. Advanced Opti Racing ( White, Blue, Red Fleets) Pre-requisite: Completion of One Year of Green Fleet and must be considered by skill level, age and maturity at instructors discretion. This course focuses on mastery of boat handling skills, advanced racing techniques, fine tuning sail controls, and physics of racing sailboats. Sailors practice using sail controls, body weight and sail theory to make their boats go faster. Sailors will be taught to ask questions about evaluating and learning about their own performance. Sailors will also be encouraged to race all regattas on the schedule. Advanced Racing (Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, Sunfish Fleets) Pre-requisite: application by resumé & approval by Sailmaster. There are strict weight requirements for the boats sailed in this class. Advanced Racing students usually have completed a minimum of two years in the Advanced Opti Classes or have out grown the Opti. They have sailed in regattas and are ready to learn more detailed information about how to race performance dinghies. Sailors work on advanced boat handling, tactics vs. strategy, control in racing scenarios, and fine tune boat and sail controls. The goals for this class include local & championship regatta participation in the Laser 4.7, Radial and Sunfish Classes.
